Kayleigh Von Grim
As Kayleigh is a student, there is very little information to discuss about her and her desire for photography. I found her on Flickr where she has an extremely wide range of wonderful photos that have a particularly strange and weird vibe to them. I like the fact that in her photos she uses the bulb effect on her camera to exaggerate the movements of each emotion bursting out from another. Below is my experimentation and response using the bulb effect. This fits in with my distorted emotion theme as it shows almost a second person trying to get out of her and show how she feels inside. I think this topic allows a lot of exploration to make the image strong enough to relate to how the viewer may see it, which is exactly what Kayleigh has achieved. I think she has used photoshop to add more emphisis and exageration on different parts such as the hands which glide across leaving a slow motion effect after. I think this is a brilliant feature to the photo as it contrasts with the emotion she is letting out in some of her images. The soft slow movement of her gliding hands then leads to show her anger pouring and screaming out.

Experimentation To Kayleigh Von Grim
These photos show the experimentation process where I went to the studio with my model and took photos using the bulb effect. I chose to have a black backdrop as i thought it was the colour that would add the most emphasis and darker effect to the image i would take. If it was white i felt it would lighten the mood and wouldn't really work with the disorientation i was planning to create with my model. I had two flashes, and switched the main light off. This left me with the only light source being from when the cameras flashed as i pressed the button on each. The camera was set just a little further back from the flashes, and i had it on a tripod. As the image will already be blurred with the bulb effect, its important i didn't get any other effect on my camera that would make it unclear to see. Once it was set up and inline with my model, i would put the camera to bulb setting and do a test run to see if it came out too light or dark. This would be done by flashing the professional flash boxes every time my model moved, so it was similar to taking lots of images all over again and them being placed all together. If it did i would have to change the aperture to either a higher or lower setting to give that darkening and mysterious effect. At this stage i wasn't really sure what the best amount of flashes would be to use so i used a number of different flashes and received a number of different outcomes. In this image i liked the emotion that my model was portraying as it was a replica of one of Kayleighs images. However it didn't turn out how i wanted as the transitions aren't clear. To improve i could only use a few flashes instead of too many which has made it unclear.
I like the composition of this photo, how it goes from a more natural face to a scary aggressive pained face. This again could use some improving by using only a few flashes instead of more than 5
Response To Kayleigh Von Grim
over lap each other. Still, i feel that the first image is stronger and looks better as her face and positioning just gives a more dramatic effect. However, the one below is still strong and clear.
This is my favourite image as each face is so clear and the composition is perfect. This relates to my theme of distorted emotion as it almost shows the three personalities in one person. To improve and make this more related to the theme, i would have had my model pulling a range of emotions instead of just one. However i do feel it is still highly effective.
In this image we where trying to achieve the look where it appeared like someone was pulling her hair up, but as you can see her hand and arm in the image. Despite this it is almost a good thing as it can be said she is pulling her hair and annoyance that she has all these emotions and thoughts in her head that she cant get out. It is still strong but if her arm wasn't visible it would have been even stronger.
These images are so effective as both clones of her are so clear and detailed. They show her reaching out for help and a slightly disapointed face, like she hasnt been helped but still needs to be. I wouldnt use these in a final piece but as an image in a whole, it is so powerful. I only used 2 flashes in these pictures to get 2 different images within this picture and it was very sucessful.
The these where images i was trying to take that had a lot of movement. For example the first one again has each clone of her so detailed and in focus, it is very powerful. The emotions she does in each tone is just more and more powerful. The image blow wasnt as effective as half of her face and head has been cut out. If this image waas taken at a further distance, it would have been a lot better and been as if she was coming out her own body. The last one is what i want to go for which would resemble the chaos in my final idea. This is because her torso is in it and you can see her transition in emotion. This is a stong image, but if i where to improve it i would make sure she had more emotion on her face so it showed more of a transition. The image is still effective even though she doesnt have an over exagerated facial expression.
This image didnt go very well, as the aim was to keep her body perfectly still and her head shaking. I chose to use this one as her facial expression is still obvious; and her hair looks like fire. The combination of these just make the image so good. To improve i would have made her body perfectly stil so her head was even more effective.
Photoshop Edited Versions
For these images, i cut around them, put them on to a black background, added shadowing using a faded eraser and sharpened features such as the eyes and lips to make them stand out as much as her hair does against her pale skin. I think this has definitely improved the images, and they definitely look a lot stronger. For the first one i wanted to see how it would look with the pencil grey tones that the sponge tool created, in comparison to full colour. As you can see, it still looks fantastic but the colour of her hair is what brings the photo to life and that adds that crazy effect to it. From then on i just continued as normal cropping round them and leaving them in full colour. I didn't find any thing tricky other than getting the fine pieces of hair around my models head perfect so they didn't look to choppy and poor quality. An advantage of the sharpen tool was that it made the models eyes appear more glazed and watery, which added more emotion to each picture. This was what i wanted as it would engage the reader more by staring at her eyes and imagining how she must be feeling. However, there where a few times where i found my self using the undo when using the sharpen tool, as sometimes it went to sharp and made the models eyes look robotic and not realistic. Eventually i found the right balance and resulted in some much stronger images.
