Statment Of Intent For My Final Developments - ADD SCANS

Mind map

Moodboard

In this moodboard, i have thought about it and decided to experiment more than one of these images, trying them all out instead of just one. Some may be harder than others, but all of them suit the emotion genre i am trying to go for but with a surreal effect.

Photographers

These photographers have inspired me to take on all there ideas and have a go at them all. Again, Some may be harder than others, but all of them suit the emotion genre i am trying to go for but with a surreal effect.

 Kayleigh Von Grim

As Kayleigh is a student, there is very little information to discuss about her and her desire for photography. I found her on Flickr where she has an extremely wide range of wonderful photos that have a particularly strange and weird vibe to them. I like the fact that in her photos she uses the bulb effect on her camera to exaggerate the movements of each emotion bursting out from another.

Alexandra Gallagher

Student Alexandra Gallagher did the following piece. She is
a student and has her own blog of her work and the research
and artists she looks into. Because of this i wont be able to reach any information about the photographer to discuss. I like this piece as she has given it a background that will set the scene for the audience instead of just a plain background which still can be just as powerful.

Jeffery Harp

I like this photo by Jeffery Harp as i feel it is similar to the idea i am going for, however, it appears this photo doesn't consider emotion as much in the photo. I like how the photo is mirrored and is the same person on each side. This is something i could consider taking up when experimenting with the weird and wonderful theme.

Ben Goossens

I like the spooky, ghost like effect that this photo has, using the bulb method or shutter speed. I feel it adds a very dramatic effect to the photo and will be sure to experiment with this idea when i experiment. This photo is similar to Kayleighs who i discussed above as both show emotion in different ways. This is a photo i could potentially make more emotional by using different expressions.

This photo was on the following website and i cannot find out who the photographer is but i love there work - http://www.webdesignburn.com/2012/01/11/35-imaginative-and-bizzarre-surreal-photos/. I like the fact shes breaking through the paper like shes showing her true self from under the emotion she portrays.

Statement Of Intent - First

My main focus for my final piece is Portraiture and is about distorted emotions. I have chosen this as i feel it allows the viewer to determine the photo and really try to understand each photo, as with portraiture you can manipulate expression and emotion to really draw the viewer in. You have a range of different angles to direct the camera in and so much choice for the person your photographing to do that you can portray a number of different messages and meanings to each photo. there are so many creative possibilities can explore with the subject of portraiture , especially through editing which leads me to the subsection with in portrait i want to take forward, surrealism. The odd ways that surrealists use to create portrait photos is what i would love to create, as it is so wonderful yet so peculiar and strange. Thus fitting perfectly to the brief of weird and wonderful. The idea i would like to take forward is the one where a girl is standing looking straight on and the camera is facing the side of her face. She will be doing a happy face or a average little expression face, and then i will ask her to move forward slowly in a certain manner and once moved pull a different face. This face will be agonizing pain, anger and fury which shows that people hide their emotions inside. I feel this will relate to a lot of the audience who will see the image and hopefully send a message to them.

The other  idea i would like to take forward is the one where there is a girl with just skin over her face, with no features, kneeling down to pick her face up off the floor. I have developed this idea a lot over and have thought of ways i can make it weirder, and still ensure it remains wonderful with a powerful message behind it. From this idea, emotion is my message and that many people have an array of different emotions that they are either given by other people EG anger, or just cant express all at once. This is why i had the two final developments of the photo, the first being of two people again with the same faces as before, just skin and they are handing each other emotions they want each other to have. I think this is weird as their faces are just skin and its weird to grasp. It also allows people to develop there own opinions of the meaning of the photo. The second is where one person is confused at which emotion to pick up off the floor, again they have just skin for a face, and the faces on the floor express different emotions.

Development of Statement of Intent - Second

My aim and genre of my photos has not changed it is still as described above in my first statement of intent. I stuck to this as i felt it wasn't the theme i was going for that was the issue, it was the fact my idea was so limited and there wasn't much originality  to it in order to make it my own, and not so similar to Kayleigh Von Grim. Since the last statement of intent i have gone over my ideas and done some more experimenting with my model to see what different images i could create, and decided to use them officially in my final piece. I decided this as after doing my shoot with my model from the Kayleigh Von Grim shoot, I really liked the idea of using the bulb effect more often. I favored these images over the face on the floor ones as i felt they fit more to the distorted emotion themes I am going for. After lots of planning on how i could make it my own, i collaborated a few ideas together to make a large panoramic image.

The picture starts with my model having a blank no expression face, no immediate exaggerated emotion. The next stage will be my model from a side view where she then has a shocked face as she goes into the next stage. This is where the image uses the bulb effect, and has a number of different emotions all in one. Emotions like sadness where she is crying, angry outbursts, fits of laughter, shocked scared faces and many others. These are all very exaggerated emotions with will make the viewer see what kind of goes on in there head that they cant fix. The emotions will be so intense that in the next stage there will be a side view where she is leaning slightly coming out of the 'chaos' with no expression or facial features, her face simply is just skin like in the image where she is picking up an emotion off the floor. I used this because i felt it was too effective to not use and it fit well with this particular image, as she doesn't know which emotion to go with as there are so many rushing around her head, leaving her with non at all. Below i have drawn out and scanned this idea so you can see a visual representation of it. To do this i will have to redo some of my current bulb effect images as my model has died her hair a different colour, and need her to take images of the side views and the portrait images at the start and end. I could also improve the bulb effect ones to show a lot more emotion than the ones i have now.

I wanted to use more emotion like Kayleigh Von Grim does, and also similar to this image below where i first experimented the Bulb effect with my model. The expression on his face is very effective and strong even though the transition of his movement and flashes could be improved. Below you can see the image i took in my final response to Kayleigh which is very effective in its transitions and looks very intriguing as well as slightly scary. This is one of the emotions i wanted to get across in this image as i want it to be entirely different spectrum of emotion not just the negative side. As you can see i will have to experiment a lot with emotions to see which ones work better and look the most effective.

Development of Statement of Intent - Third

Again i have stuck to the same theme as the last time, and genre, but changed my idea completely. The image of the previous statement of intent is still an option but i have recently realized that i would rather do something to show more creativity and flare. I discovered this idea once i had found the photographer Rosie Hardy and saw that her images where so powerful and relate-able to the distorted emotion theme, i had to try and experiment with her work to fit it into my idea. This idea begins with my model standing still in a full body shot with a plain straight face expression. Her head will be cut slightly using Photoshop so it looks like a hollow bowl almost. Above this will be lots of different hands which will each hold a different word, whether it be a quote emotion or descriptive word, they will all be relevant to the theme. They will be fighting over each other to put the words in her head.  The next scene is where i have copied my previous idea as i will be using the bulb effect to show her falling forwards where she will be landing on her hands and knees. In this transition her face will have a shocked face and will be around three different flashes, as too many may be less effective and make the images unclearer. Once she is on the floor it leads to the next image where she has one hand out trying to choose one of the faces that are on the floor, like the image i was planning to do in my very first statement of intent. I bought this back to my images as i felt that the image would go with this image as the words in her head will show on the floor, just in the form of different faces. This image will then lead to a new transition where she is being pulled up off the floor with puppet strings. This will be a bulb effect again and show her being dragged up to standing. The next set of images will be of someone making her behave in ways to the emotions that she has been fed at the beginning of the image showing her lack of freedom. One of these will be in the air , one on the floor and one in the air again.  Here is an image of the drawn out idea so you have a better visual representation.

                                                                SCAN MY IDEA 2

I was then given the idea that i could make the image more me by adding more of a story behind it. I had the plan all set out, but there wasn't much story too it that is clear to the viewer who was seeing it. It was also suggested that i could relate it to myself as i have been in a situation the same as the one i portray in my image, i just never thought of using it within photography. I was in a situation where i was manipulated and abused by a partner, which fits exactly to what i trying to portray in this idea. The emotions i felt, the secrets i kept, the way i behaved can all be illustrated in this image to show it as my story. I feel this will make the image stronger and definitely more 'me' rather than just copying the photographers images and putting them together. From this, i will have to make a few adjustments to make it suit my story. The first change i made was the addition of hands, which would push her into transitions and pull her up from the floor. These hands will also stop her from picking the faces up off the floor that i plan to make all happy positive faces. This means that the person who is pushing her is stopping her from grabbing any hope or positive feelings, just reserving and increasing the negative ones he gives her. Another change is that at the begging, i still plan for the hands to be fighting over one and other to put words in her head, but these will be all the same persons hands to show he is the one putting them all in her head and overloading her with these feelings. The words will be things such as help, secret, hurt, judge, never leave, stay, breakable and many others that explain the things that where put in my head and the emotions that i was made to feel. The final change is the puppet positioning where i will have the same hands from the transitions etc attaching the strings and making her pull specific reactions and behaviors. For example a lot of what happened was a secret so i thought i could have one where the strings are making her cover her mouth. I also wanted to do one where she was wrapped in the puppet strings and her trying to escape but shes stuck.

I was then suggested that instead of just using this idea i could use the 2nd development i made where there is the chaos and the blank face, as they are all relevant and would make the image stronger as a whole. As they are both large panorama images, they will be difficult and a long time to make them perfect, especially if i have to Photoshop them too.  Here is an image of what i imagine my final piece to look like.
