Final Piece Research - Rosie Hardy Work

Rosie Hardy

Rosie Hardy is another individual who i found off Flickr who creates stunning images, some of which relate to my distorted emotion theme. She also has like Kayleigh Von Grim a large number of mysterious weird and wonderful images which can relate to a majority of the audience. The one i am particularly going to try is this one featured below.

As you can see, this image shows her almost using her head as a fruit bowl. This wouldn't be relevant to what i would do, but to make it so i had the idea to instead of having fruit, have words. These will be giant print outs of newspaper and magazine words which each feature a different emotion on them. Further more, to relate this even more to emotion, i was planning to take different images of peoples hands and forearms so it showed a number of people inputting certain emotions into one person. I feel this is a strong picture in terms of my theme as it shows how people can make us feel certain ways whether they are good or bad, this is just a weird way to portray it. One of the words i know for definite i would like to use is ones related to self consciousness and paranoia. This is because some things go straight to our head and make us paranoid such as comments on how we look etc. This could be manipulated and make the image a lot stronger than only using emotions like sadness and happiness. I also considered quotes in different fonts that i had written myself and printed out on larger paper. This will vary and show the different intensities of each comment, especially as they are all going in her head at once making her full of to many different emotions. To do this image, i will have to use Photoshop and take the top of her head off making it look hollow. I would hope my model would have an expression that was either a blank face with no features just skin, similar to the one i have discussed in my statement of intent, or a face that would represent her overload.

I also wanted to try this as i felt it was again a strong image when it came to emotion. However, instead of this being a facial expression, its the actions it causes because of the emotion. This is an interesting twist to the distorted emotion theme as it makes you realize. To make this my own, i was planning to have a shadow of a hand placed above so that it looked like someone was controlling her, and other shadows coming to do the same and change her behavior. To make this relate to the theme, i would put this aside the picture i have shown above where the words are entered into her head. As there will be more than one string, i was planning to have the shadows grabbing on each one and changing her behavior and grabbing one and other to change it. Another idea i had was to have the emotion portrayed in the image above faded into the shadow so that you can clearly tell that the emotions are effecting her behavior.

For this image, i really liked it as it showed the ironic fact that the happy clown was scared of the shadows, which is not normally what you would expect. The fact that Rosie has manipulated the emotions in the image makes it funny as well as weird. The shape of the hands in the shadows look like they are trying to spell something out to the girl in the picture. There are a lot of E's used in this image from there hand shape so it gave me an idea to make this more relevant to my theme. I could have the hands spell out whatever emotion what being shown to the girl on the chair. I also wouldn't use the clown outfit, but just my model cowering on the hair like she is or with her hands on over her face hiding herself way from them.

Experimentation To Rosie Hardy Puppet Image

Many of these images didn't go to plan and the positioning wasn't always in a good place. For example the image was very strong but due to us being in the pitch black and just the flash going off as a light source it was hard to get the image perfectly accurate. I decided to copy off the attire she wares in Rosie Hardy's picture as i felt it was more of a vulnerable effect to the image, especially if her hair was to be over her face. I could potentially use these for my final piece as well as some of them have come out very well.

I chose this image as her body positioning is the best one. It is the one that i can work with the most when i go onto later editing it on Photoshop. Even though there is a lot of background in the image and the background is not complete black, it can be easily edited to make it better and more effective.

I chose this one as i love her body position and the darkness of the image around her. The only disadvantage is that her arm is slightly cut out which means i wouldn't be able to do much on Photoshop in order to add the puppet strings into it. If she was fully in this image it would have been such a strong and powerful one.

I also like this composition of her body as her hole body is in it and she has a great presence in the image. This is one of the strongest images i have, but the only issue i can imagine to have with it is that you cant see her legs or her arm clearly enough to put the puppet rope around it when it comes to editing.

This image is strong as her hole body is in the composition in a strong manner. I feel this photo can be manipulated to make it look like she is being lifted off the floor by the people who are controlling the puppet. This would be a little different compared to the other photos i have where she is being pulled whilst shes on her knees.

For both these images, i tried to use the bulb effect which Kayleigh Von Grim uses, to add a more weird mysterious feel to it. These where the best images i got from using this effect, however they weren't as strong as i had hoped. I will still edit them in Photoshop to see what they look like if they where to be put into a puppet situation. This may be hard but it could potentially create a very strong image.

Here are some images from another puppet scene shoot that i tool that actually have the ropes attached to them. These are a lot better positions and i got her hole body in instead of accidentally cropping my model out like i did in the previous images.

I then found the following website which allows you to make your dolls look like real life puppets, which would be a lot more convincing than just attaching the string to someones wrist, and there body Lagrange being exaggerated. http://jonhallphoto.com/2012/10/29/photoshop-tutorial-how-to-turn-your-model-into-a-marionette-puppet/ . For my final piece involving this puppet scene i wanted it to look more elegant, which would just emphasis's the aggression of the hands grabbing her etc making them stand out more to the audience. This means that all i plan to do is have the model attached to some string with more aggressive facial expressions and body positions. However i did try this and this was my out come.

To create this the first step was to use the dodge tool and burn too which would add shadows in the limbs and also the to add that glow to make it look shiny like a doll. This was easy as all you had to do was zoom in and make sure that you accurately got the shading etc in the right places. The next step was the hardest as you had to either create a mask layer to your image and place an ellipsis on the joint where it would be removed, to do an ellipsis tool and then paint the inside of it black. As the site doesn't go into more detail about the mask part of the process, i had to use paint. This is why the image of the website has a circle of skin that goes just under where its been cropped on the joint and mine doesn't. The next step was to add a bendable metal piece in between all the joints. As i had no access to one of these to take a picture of and add in between, i used the paint too to get the closest colour i could, and then painted in the center. I  then used the sharpen tool as it makes the image look as if it is more metal like than it actually is. Obviously this was no where near as good as if i where to use a real life piece of metal and crop it in. This would have also been easier for placing it on top of the skin so it looked more realistic. To make mine better i could have done an equal spread of the dodge tool as some parts are brighter than others, and i could have used an actual piece of metal so that the hole image would look a little bit stronger. I would also have to do some research into how to make the mask layer in order to cut out the joint so i would have expanded my knowledge as well as make the image a lot better and more realistic than my version currently looks. However i did try again making the arm ellipsis cutting a lot stronger so that i had that bit of sin under the metal piece , making it look a lot better than before and more effective but still isn't up to the best standard.  As i don't plan on using this type of puppet in my final piece, its not important that i master creating this, but i have attempted and realized how i can improve it if necessary.

Photoshop Of Favorite Puppet Positions

For this, i added the same strings that where on the second set of images by simply copy and pasting it, and putting it in the correct place for it to align with the arms. I also went round each image, placed it on a background, added a little fading using the eraser tool to make them look more realistic and also the sharpen tool which sharpened the eyes and parts i wanted to be most exaggerated. As some of the first selection of pictures above where very bright, i added the burn tool to them by brushing over the image once or twice. This made them have a similar colour skin tone to all the rest and also made them look more realistic. I also did this around the body's too which added a shadow to them, making them yet again look more realistic and stronger images overall.

Experimentation To Rosie Hardy Head Image

For this section of Rosie hardy s work, i decided i would try her image where her models head acts as a fruit bowl, but just make it suit my theme of distorted emotion. My idea was to have hands fighting over putting certain words into her head.  These words would be like scared, alone, secret and hurt, as they all link with the emotions that you feel when in the situation that i am trying to portray. Here are the top images i have chosen that would be best suited to this type of image. I plan to use for the head, which i will cut across the forehead, and further Photoshop to make it look like a hollow bowl. I chose these images as they had the best expressions on my models face that would represent the overload she felt of all these words that where put on her head.

Here are the pictures i have taken of the words that i cut out from the magazines. Each one is relevant to how you would feel in a situation like the one i want my model to be in for my final piece. This is where she is being controlled and almost abused mentally by someone and don't know how to act or what to feel as there are so many feelings and thoughts rushing through her head. I felt this would be an effective way to show it as the words below are just straight and direct of what the real feelings are in that situation. This will be immediate for the viewer to understand and not look at the image and be confused as to how it links in.

Below is my version of Rosie hardy's image head fruit bowl image. I added some of the words i have shown above, and added the burn tool to add a little shadow over them to resemble the hand over it. I also added the burn tool around the rim of her head and made it look hollower. To create the shape pf my models hear used the paint brush on the colour black and made the size as big as would fit, so that it nicely made an straight and equal ring in her head. I then moved this layer above all the words so that they slotted in the head, making them look like they where shoved and rammed all inside. I used the sharpening tool on her eyes to make them look more emotion filled, and also added the faded rubber tool over her hair and shoulders to make them appear more realistic. I did find this website http://www.photoshoptutorials.ws/photoshop-tutorials/photo-manipulation/creating-surreal-head-stack-photo-manipulation/  to help me create a more realistic technical version of what i had created before. However as i was going to fill the head with words, there would be no point as it would cover up the back to the head that that particular website would have helped me create.
